"Connekt as an organizer and connector in logistics"

Published on November 12, 2025

Michiel Nijdam, Head of Strategy and Analysis at the Port of Rotterdam Authority, sees Connekt as the ultimate party that makes logistical cooperation possible. He shares his vision on digitalization, sustainability, circularity, and the future of a high-tech logistics sector.

“Connekt organizes events where people meet and ensures that collaboration takes shape. Within the program office, it is also ensured that projects have the right knowledge and resources and are moving in the right direction. If something needs to be organized in logistics, I quickly think: let's see if Connekt can help.”

Digital infrastructure
A prime example is the Digital Infrastructure Logistics (DIL) program. Together with parties such as Portbase and the Port Authority, Connekt is building a national standard for data sharing in logistics. Meanwhile, they are looking at how this can also be scaled up at a European level. “This strengthens Dutch logistics and the international position of the Port of Rotterdam,” says Nijdam.

Sustainability and circularity
Nijdam sees the transition to zero-emission logistics as the greatest challenge. “Diesel trucks and inland vessels must become sustainable faster than their lifespan actually allows. This is only possible with public-private partnership: the government sets the frameworks and companies invest, but with certainty about the course.”

The rise of the circular economy is also going to turn logistics upside down. Products return to the chain and require new infrastructure, rules, and processes. “There are enormous challenges there – and here too, Connekt can organize the dialogue and bring parties together.”

Automation
In addition to sustainability, Nijdam sees a shift towards digitalization and automation. “Information flows have changed completely: where previously only the connection between truck and terminal mattered, there is now a global web of data. For the future, I expect high-tech logistics with self-driving trailers, self-mooring ships, and fully automated transshipment. Humans are disappearing from many operational processes. That may take another thirty or forty years, but the outlines are already becoming visible.”

Trust and connection
According to Nijdam, Connekt's greatest value is building trust. “Logistics is a collective activity. You need infrastructure, rules, and entrepreneurship. That always requires public-private partnership. Connekt makes that connection possible – and that is crucial to realizing the major transitions.”
