Traffic and Public Space

Good accessibility to both the center of Amsterdam and the suburbs is essential for social life and the city's economy. Whether on foot, by bicycle, by public transport, or by car, maintaining a fine-grained network of buses, trams, and metros is a priority. The Traffic and Public Space department (V&OR) of the City of Amsterdam ensures that residents and visitors can move safely and efficiently through an accessible and attractive city. To this end, the department develops traffic and transport policies and implements them by realizing and managing infrastructure. Traffic and Public Space has a central directing role and is therefore the knowledge center in the field of infrastructure, traffic, and transport.

The broad field of V&OR includes not only the development, implementation, and management of roads but also the automated systems for traffic lights and electronic signage to guide traffic effectively. In addition, policies are developed for taxis and bicycles, for example, and the department is responsible for managing the main road network, tunnels, bridges, and locks in the city. Traffic and Public Space is also involved in realizing major infrastructural projects in the city and works closely with the city districts.
