Metropolitan Region Rotterdam The Hague

The Metropolitan Region Rotterdam The Hague is a metropolitan area with 23 municipalities in the south of the Randstad.

It is home to 2.3 million people, 1.2 million jobs, and 13.5% of the Dutch workforce. Every city and village has its own identity, but cooperation is sought to strengthen the region economically. More and more people are moving to cities for work. This development will continue in the coming years, which requires more housing, more jobs, and better accessibility.

Renewing connections

For a vital economy, the economic heart must continue to beat. Residents, visitors, and business traffic must be able to move easily. Work must be reachable within 45 minutes. This requires investments: in public transport, in bicycle paths, in motorways, and in innovative mobility services, including shared cars and autonomous transport.

Challenges

More people means more travelers. To accommodate this growth, the municipalities in the metropolitan region are working on strengthening the public transport network. But that is not the only challenge. The Metropolitan Region Rotterdam The Hague is also working on automated transport for the first and last mile, with the Rivium park shuttle in Capelle aan den IJssel as the first of six locations in the region.

In addition, the region is committed to making infrastructure smarter with intelligent traffic lights for cyclists and public transport, encouraging smart travel using Mobility as a Service (MaaS), truck platooning, and safe, clean, and quiet urban distribution. This shortens travel times, ensures efficient use of means of transport, and contributes to a pleasant living environment for residents.
