The ministry works on strong connections by road, rail, water, and air. In addition, IenW protects the Netherlands against flooding and promotes the quality of air and water.

Transport by road, water, and rail will continue to grow in the coming period. This growth is particularly concentrated in urban areas and on connections to the hinterland. This is where the majority of people live and where most economic activities take place. Ensuring that people and goods can be transported without delay is of great importance for the growth and competitiveness of the Dutch economy.

It is particularly busy in and around the major cities. Different solutions are needed to improve accessibility—smarter and cleaner solutions. Investing in the construction of new infrastructure at bottlenecks and missing links goes hand in hand with the smarter and more efficient use of existing infrastructure. (Mobile) information technology plays an important role in this. To contribute to the Paris climate goals, the mobility sector in the Netherlands must also become more sustainable. In the long term (2050), CO2 emissions must be reduced to (near) zero. This requires the commitment of all forms of transport.
