The Urban Development Department (DSO) is responsible for the spatial-economic development of the city of The Hague. The department's main fields of activity are: urban design & planning, housing, traffic, economy, permits, monument care, aesthetics, geo-information, ground lease, and enforcement. At the Urban Development Department, over 800 professionals from 13 departments work daily on the sustainable development of the city.

The challenge: City in transition

Not only in The Hague, but worldwide, there are rapid, fundamental changes in technology, demographics, geopolitics, economy, and climate that are structurally altering social and economic relations. In the spatial domain, the most densely populated city in the Netherlands faces major challenges. In the coming years, The Hague will grow to 625,000 inhabitants. Associated transitions include: sustainable energy generation and use, creating jobs for medium- and low-skilled residents of The Hague, strengthening spatial qualities in outdoor spaces and architecture, being a socially inclusive city, and further improving urban accessibility and connections with the region and European cities.
These transitions present the Municipality of The Hague with intricate, complex, and multifaceted challenges. The administration of The Hague addresses this by taking 'Trust in the Power of The Hague' as a starting point, utilizing the city's potential as much as possible.

The 'City in transition' requires leadership and therefore an organization that evolves with these new developments. In recent years, DSO has invested heavily in the leadership development of its management, and this will continue.
