NDW

National Database of Road Traffic Data

In NDW, numerous government authorities collaborate on the collection, storage, and distribution of road traffic data. The data is utilized for traffic management, traffic information, and traffic engineering analyses. The objective of these efforts is to achieve better accessibility and traffic flow, increased road safety, and reduced emissions of harmful substances. Partners within NDW include Rijkswaterstaat, all provinces, the metropolitan regions, and the municipalities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht.

Current traffic data (intensities, speeds, travel times, and vehicle categories) from roadside measurement systems, such as loops covering over 8,200 km of national highways, provincial roads, and major municipal roads, are included in the NDW database. Data from 24,000 measurement locations is processed every minute. Since last year, NDW has also had access to real-time travel times based on Floating Car Data for over 50,000 km of roads. In addition to real-time traffic data, the database also includes traffic jam reports, status data (open/closed) for bridges, and information on roadworks. A history of the data is compiled and used for traffic engineering analyses.

NDW data is made available to road users via apps, navigation systems, traffic information bulletins, and websites that use NDW as a source. The traffic control centers of the road authorities are also connected to the database.

NDW has agreements in place for market parties wishing to purchase 'managed' data. In addition, the data is also available as open data.
