Province of Flevoland

To strengthen accessibility, safety, and liveability in Flevoland and contribute to economic developments, we want to seize the opportunities offered by new information and communication technologies.

As the youngest province in the Netherlands, Flevoland has a good network of road and waterway connections. The infrastructure is clearly integrated into the landscape. Through roads ensure smooth connections between urban centers. The road network offers a robust system with alternative routes. Compared to other provinces, Flevoland scores well on safety, although there are still areas for improvement. The effective separation of traffic flows in the province benefits both traffic flow and safety.

There are also challenges within the mobility system. The road network is vulnerable to disruptions due to the limited number of waterway crossings. The long, straight roads are less safe: they encourage speeding or cause attention to wane. Agricultural traffic regularly causes delays and unsafe situations in the Noordoostpolder and eastern Flevoland. The distances between urban centers are so great that Flevoland residents usually choose the car or public transport, resulting in a relatively low share of cycling in total trips.

The number of residents and jobs in Flevoland is expected to grow in the coming years. This will increase the pressure on the road network. At the same time, new developments and technologies offer opportunities to enhance accessibility and its quality. They provide opportunities to better utilize the road network and limit the negative effects of mobility on the living environment.

To strengthen accessibility, safety, and liveability in Flevoland and contribute to economic developments, we therefore want to seize the opportunities offered by new information and communication technologies. This commitment led to the creation of the Smart Mobility Action Plan 2017-2020. This action plan focuses on the unique opportunities of the province through Smart Mobility. One of the most important pillars of the Action Plan is collaboration. Collaboration with other government bodies, such as municipalities, and an active commitment to the MRA Smart Mobility program. But the Province of Flevoland is also open to market parties and knowledge institutions!
