North Holland strives for a smooth and safe flow of traffic.

The users of its roads, waterways, and public transport are central, by providing (or facilitating) up-to-date travel information and by enabling them to complete their routes as efficiently as possible. In doing so, the province continuously balances the interests of traffic flow, reliability, and road safety. We achieve this objective through investments in high-quality public transport and traffic management.

A great example of public transport is R-net line 300, a network of bus lines around Schiphol with dedicated infrastructure on large parts of the route. The frequency is high, and stops are equipped with the DRIS system: dynamic passenger information with real-time waiting times.

The province takes the lead in regional network management, with the aim of utilizing the available infrastructure as optimally as possible. This has resulted in successful projects that have been followed nationwide. Examples include Regio Regie (coordination of roadworks and information sharing) and the regional tactical team (where integrated measures and control scenarios spanning multiple road authorities are deployed and managed). The provincial traffic control center has been operational since 2011. From here, the province monitors traffic and takes measures, including the online control of traffic signal installations. All this results in reliable travel time information, improved traffic flow, and reduced travel time loss.
