Province of South Holland

For years, the Province of South Holland has worked together with other road authorities to ensure a powerful approach to Dynamic Traffic Management in South Holland.

This involves looking at the characteristics of an area (rural/urban), resulting in optimal flow on both roads and waterways. At an operational level, all traffic management systems of the road authorities in South Holland are linked. The province and the municipality of The Hague have purchased a joint traffic management system, to which the majority of municipalities were connected in 2017. Further substance will be given to this regional cooperation in 2018. The system offers new functionalities for directing traffic flows, operating traffic lights, road cameras, and information boards, and creating a link between shipping management and road traffic management.

In addition, 'De Blauwe Golf Verbindend' (The Blue Wave Connects) has been launched, a national partnership between provinces, municipalities, Rijkswaterstaat, and logistics partners. By making smart use of available data and telecommunication techniques, the sailing schedule and arrival times of inland vessels can be predicted to the minute. This is useful for skippers, but also for motorists who will know when the bridge is open—for example, via their navigation system or app. This has already been implemented on the Gouwe, meaning this waterway connection increasingly functions as a true corridor. Finally, the central object control project (remote bridge operation) was virtually completed in 2017, allowing the most important bridges over provincial waterways to be operated remotely.
