Schiphol

In the aviation world, only a limited number of airports are successful in both passenger and cargo transport. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is one of these successful airports.

In 2017, 68.5 million passengers traveled via Schiphol and 1,752,571 tons of cargo were transported. This maintains the airport's third-place position in Europe. This makes Schiphol one of the leading cargo airports in Europe. But how do you become successful and what do you need to stay that way? Schiphol believes that cargo processes must be designed more intelligently and that you must enter into partnerships with players in the chain (such as airlines and ground handlers, but also logistics service providers, truckers, and government parties, e.g., Customs). It is our role as an airport to inspire and challenge the chain parties (also known as our 'Cargo Community') to collaborate on designing an even smarter, more transparent, and more efficient cargo process. In this way, we want to become the smartest cargo hub in Europe.

Having a strong cargo marketplace is not only beneficial for employment but also for the development of the Dutch economy. When cargo processes are efficiently organized, goods can reach their final destination faster. As a result, customers are more likely to use air freight via the Netherlands. Schiphol is a Mainport, a hub with 326 direct destinations in 2017. Our network not only offers significant employment in the region (25% of all aviation activities are cargo-related) but also ensures an attractive business climate for foreign companies and strengthens the Dutch position in international trade.
