Transport Region Amsterdam

The Transport Region Amsterdam is committed to ensuring optimal accessibility within the Amsterdam region.

Connecting is our mission. As the director of regional traffic and transport, we contribute to high-quality connections between destinations, enabling people to travel quickly, safely, and comfortably by public transport, bicycle, or car. To achieve this, we pool our knowledge and administrative power with fifteen municipalities. The municipalities of Aalsmeer, Amstelveen, Amsterdam, Beemster, Diemen, Edam-Volendam, Haarlemmermeer, Landsmeer, Oostzaan, Ouder-Amstel, Purmerend, Uithoorn, Waterland, Wormerland, and Zaanstad together form the Transport Region Amsterdam.

As the Transport Region, we also seek connections with other government authorities, educational and knowledge institutions, social organizations, and the business community. Together, we develop innovative solutions for mobility challenges. In doing so, we strive for the sustainable use of energy and raw materials within the traffic and transport system. Thus, we contribute to an economically strong region that is pleasant for everyone to travel in and visit.

The Transport Region is the contracting authority for public transport by bus, tram, and metro. For this purpose, we grant concessions to transport companies and provide subsidies for the operation of public transport. We also invest in new trams and metros.

In addition, the Transport Region finances improvements to regional infrastructure for cars, freight transport, bicycles, and public transport, and develops policies for the better utilization and use of the road network and the public transport and bicycle networks. We take on a leading or supporting role, ensuring that the interests of various parties converge in our approach and providing connections to local and national networks.

We also encourage bicycle use and are working on a network of high-quality, fast cycling routes in the Amsterdam region. To strengthen the combination of cycling and public transport, we play an active role in the construction of bicycle parking facilities at stations. Furthermore, we are committed to a traffic-safe region and reducing the number of traffic casualties. Our focus is on safe infrastructure and safe traffic behavior through education, information, and enforcement. The road user is central to this approach.
