Review of Connekt's logistics members' day at Medel business park

Published on November 12, 2025

Yesterday, Connekt's logistics members' day took place at the Huis van de Logistiek at Bedrijvenpark Medel and Logistics Valley Rivierenland. In collaboration with Buck Consultants International, participants engaged in discussions about the future of logistics business parks and hubs.

The program combined inspiring presentations with site visits on and around Bedrijvenpark Medel. The day began with an introduction to the region by Frank Engelbart (Logistics Valley Rivierenland).

Energy, space, and logistics innovation

The high-quality contributions addressed themes such as spatial planning, real estate, energy security, and the implementation of automated transport. A recurring theme was the scarcity of space, energy, and personnel, which underscores the urgency of thinking differently about design, collaboration, and innovation.

Marcel Nielen (Joulz) presented the creation of the self-sufficient Energy Hub Medel: a first for the region, developed by Joulz in close cooperation with grid operator Liander. The hub is completely independent of the existing energy grid and combines local generation, storage, and exchange of power. This creates a unique system in which the meter reading remains at zero. Afterwards, the group visited the Energy Hub on-site to observe the practical application up close.

Autonomous transport and data sharing

After lunch, Richard Matthijse (MST Groep) presented the ATLAS project, which investigates how automated transport at distribution centers can contribute to more efficient logistics. Much like local energy supply, this transition primarily requires cooperation and organizational strength. The technology exists, but gaining the commitment of all parties involved remains the key to success.

Next, Arjan Jonker (DIL) provided an explanation of the Connected Trade Network: an initiative to better utilize data in container logistics through federated data sharing. This allows parties to share relevant data, even if they do not work together directly. This makes it possible to respond more quickly within the chain, realize modal shifts, and improve security. In the coming months, an initial pilot will launch with a group of terminals to develop an MVP.

From road to water

The program concluded with a visit to Van Berkel's Inland Terminal Tiel. Maike de Bruijn explained the terminal's ambitions and the opportunities for more sustainable logistics through a modal shift from road to water.

The day demonstrated that innovative solutions for energy, data, and transport primarily emerge when parties pool their knowledge, experience, and resources.

In collaboration with Logistics Valley Rivierenland, Buck Consultants International, Monique Spijker, Frank Engelbart, and Kees Verweij, we look back on an educational day.
