Meet our Members: KPN

Published on January 29, 2026

In Meet our Members, Connekt puts one of its members in the spotlight. We highlight their involvement in the network and their contribution to current themes in mobility and logistics. This time, we are featuring KPN!

KPN believes that collaboration is the key to sustainable, smart, and safe mobility. As a leading provider of digital infrastructure and connectivity, KPN contributes to solutions that keep the Netherlands accessible, safe, and future-proof.

KPN: Connectivity as a driver for smart and safe mobility

The Connekt network plays a central role in keeping the Netherlands accessible, safe, and future-proof. It does this by bringing public and private parties together to accelerate innovations in mobility and logistics. For KPN, being part of this network is a logical step toward identifying shared challenges and developing effective solutions.

Below, we highlight a number of defining innovations:

Real-time insight: Common Operational Picture (COP)

During large-scale events, such as SAIL 2025, an integrated overview is crucial. The Common Operational Picture (COP), developed by KPN and its partners, bundles real-time data from various sources—such as crowd indicators, movement patterns, and IoT sensors—into a single shared image. This data is shared securely via KPN’s Data Services Hub, allowing the safety region, municipality, and emergency services to coordinate faster and more effectively. This prevents risks and enables proactive anticipation. This approach is also applicable to urban mobility and logistics, for example, to optimize freight flows in busy city centers.

Federated data sharing: DIL program and FIAM

Within the Data in Logistics (DIL) program facilitated by Connekt, public and private parties are working on realizing federated data sharing through the development of the Basic Data Infrastructure (BDI). This is a crucial step toward making chains in mobility and logistics smarter and more transparent.

With Federated Identity & Access Management (FIAM), KPN has developed a service that facilitates complex processes surrounding identity and authorization. Through this, KPN aligns with the BDI and European initiatives such as data spaces and the EU Data Act. A concrete example is Eneco, where FIAM is used to process requests for data from charging stations and smart meters securely and automatically.

Innovation and drones: The future of autonomous transport

KPN is investing heavily in the future of autonomous transport through projects such as Wireless Intersection (FNS 6G) and Crashguard. In these projects, antennas do not just communicate; they also detect objects such as pedestrians and cyclists, contributing to safer intersections. Additionally, Project Estuary ensures a seamless handover of connections between the Netherlands and Belgium, which is essential for autonomous transport on the Rotterdam-Antwerp corridor.

Drones also offer new possibilities in healthcare logistics. Reliable connectivity is a prerequisite for the safe transport of blood samples and medicines between hospitals (as seen in test flights between Meppel and Zwolle). With Drone Connect, KPN provides stable 4G and 5G connections at an altitude of 100 meters. This enables BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) flights, where drones fly safely out of the pilot's sight while remaining in constant communication with air traffic control and command centers.

Working together on the future

By actively participating in Connekt and investing in solutions for crowd management, data exchange, autonomous transport, and drones, KPN demonstrates how digital infrastructure and physical mobility go hand in hand. Together, we are building a Netherlands that moves smarter, safer, and more sustainably.
