Meet our Members: Port of Rotterdam Authority

Published on February 26, 2026

In Meet our Members, Connekt puts one of its members in the spotlight every two weeks. We highlight their involvement in the network and their contribution to current themes in mobility and logistics. This week, we are featuring our Premium Member, the Port of Rotterdam Authority!

The goal of the Port of Rotterdam Authority is to strengthen the competitive position of the Port of Rotterdam as a world-class logistics hub and industrial complex. Not only in terms of size, but also in quality.

Working together on smart, clean, and future-proof logistics

For decades, the Port of Rotterdam has been the beating heart of Dutch logistics. As a gateway to Europe, the port evolves alongside international goods flows, technological developments, and societal challenges. In this dynamic arena, cooperation between government, the business community, and knowledge institutions is indispensable—exactly the type of collaboration that is established within Connekt.

Connekt as a connector and organizer

Within the logistics sector, Connekt plays an important role as an organizer and driver of collaboration. Its strength lies in bringing parties together, facilitating programs, and creating the right conditions to actually implement ideas. For organizations such as the Port of Rotterdam Authority, this is valuable: when something important needs to be addressed or when multiple parties share the same challenge, Connekt provides a trusted environment to take collective steps.

Digital infrastructure as a foundation

An example of this is the Digital Infrastructure Logistics (DIL) program, which is building a single, uniform digital method for data exchange within Dutch logistics. By bringing together parties such as the port community system Portbase, logistics service providers, and the port, a shared foundation for data standardization is created.

The ambition extends beyond the Netherlands: the approach could grow into a European standard. This would allow Dutch logistics—and the Port of Rotterdam in particular—to position itself more strongly internationally.

Collaboration as the key to robust logistics

Logistics is a public-private sector par excellence. A smooth and safely functioning chain requires solid infrastructure, smart regulations, and entrepreneurship that dares to invest. The scale and complexity of activities in and around the port make it necessary for parties to be able to trust and find each other.

Connekt’s meetings and programs create that foundation: a place where policymakers, companies, and knowledge institutions meet, share experiences, and shape collective ambitions.

The major shift to zero emissions

One of the biggest transitions facing the sector is the switch to zero-emission logistics. Trucks, inland vessels, and terminals must become more sustainable, but replacing equipment that sometimes lasts forty years is a slow process. However, societal pressure to accelerate sustainability is increasing.

Intensive cooperation between government and the business community is necessary here. Clear frameworks, stimulating or steering measures, and joint exploration of feasible routes are essential to trigger investment. Connekt plays an important role in this by bringing parties together around this theme and continuing to organize the dialogue.

Towards circular logistics

The growth of the circular economy brings a second major change. Products and materials will increasingly flow back into the production process. This means new logistics flows, new hubs, and a new infrastructure.

This shift again requires smart combinations of regulation, infrastructure investment, and entrepreneurship. Here too, Connekt can help connect parties and jointly explore the outlines of future logistics systems.

Digitalization and automation: towards a high-tech port

Digitalization is rapidly changing the logistics sector. Where previously the link between truck and terminal was central, there are now countless digital connections providing valuable real-time information for every link in the chain.

This development is the prelude to a future in which automation plays an increasingly important role. Think of autonomous ships, self-driving trailers, and fully automated transshipment processes. Although this future is not yet a reality tomorrow, the port is steadily growing towards a high-tech logistics system in which processes are organized increasingly efficiently and safely.

Looking ahead together

The Port of Rotterdam is in the midst of the major transitions of our time: sustainability, digitalization, circular logistics, and automation. None of these developments can be carried by a single organization alone.

In Connekt, the sector finds a place where these issues can be discussed, where parties strengthen each other, and where collective steps are taken. These are precisely the connections needed to shape the logistics of the future: smart, clean, digital, and resilient.
