In Meet our Members, Connekt puts one of its members in the spotlight every two weeks. We highlight their involvement in the network and their contribution to current themes in mobility and logistics. This time, it is the turn of Premium Member SWARCO.

The better way, every day

SWARCO improves quality of life by making the travel experience safer, faster, more convenient, and more environmentally friendly, with the motto The better way, every day. As a leading global provider of, among other things, urban traffic control systems, traffic/parking management systems, motorway signaling and information systems, tunnel control, and CCAM solutions, SWARCO makes a concrete contribution to the transition to safe, efficient, and sustainable mobility in the Netherlands.

The interaction between vehicle/bicycle/pedestrian and infrastructure is increasingly playing a role in the route toward autonomous driving. Increasing road safety with the aim of reducing casualties is a key priority in SWARCO's vision.

Innovation in road safety

A great example of this is their recent project at the Future Mobility Park in Rotterdam for Rijkswaterstaat. Here, SWARCO, together with V-tron and EBO van Weel, is demonstrating the securing of an arrow truck for closing a lane. This is based on the German solution from Autobahn des Bundes for securing roadworks, where vehicles are directly informed about the approaching object.

The basis is the trust model (CPOC) that the European Commission has set up for authentication and security. Rijkswaterstaat is using this demonstration to gain learning experiences in this area, with the aim that the trust model can be applied to both direct communication and communication via mobile networks with vehicles. V-tron is using a Volkswagen ID3 from regular production for this. This will be shown extensively at the upcoming Intertraffic Amsterdam in March 2026.

SWARCO and Connekt

As a Premium Connekt member, SWARCO has been sharing its expertise for years within various knowledge sessions and strategic consultations, particularly on topics such as traffic management, smart cities, connected and autonomous driving, and asset management.

“To make substantial steps in the field of road safety, we will have to standardize on a European scale. The Netherlands must join in. Road authorities face the task of preparing for this to ensure the correct design of the infrastructure,” says Freek van der Valk of SWARCO.

With their mix of technical prowess and vision for the mobility of the future, SWARCO is an indispensable partner in the Connekt network.
